BlueSkies Home Health MOTs
BlueSkies Health MOTs provide a comprehensive health screening service for a large number of people every year. However, for various reasons, many people will be unable to attend organised sessions and it can often be difficult for them to find time to visit their GP for screening. This is the reason that BlueSkies have developed our Home Health MOT service.
A BlueSkies Home Health MOT is exactly as it sounds - a version of our very successful Health MOT service which you can carry out at home! Home Health MOTs allow you to assess your health from the comfort and convenience of your own home with full guidance and support from us.
Although your Home Health MOT is carried out in your home, you are certainly not alone once you have determined the results. We will support and advise you about how you can improve your health and reduce your health risks through the BlueSkies Members Website and Forum to which you will receive 8 weeks complimentary access.
With a BlueSkies Home Health MOT, you get all of the benefits of a traditional BlueSkies Health MOT but you get to do it in the comfort of your own home. You can even ask a friend or partner to help you out with the testing if you like!

What's included in a BlueSkies Health MOT?
BlueSkies Health MOTs can be tailored to meet your requirements. You can choose which assessments you would like to include and how long you would like each MOT to last. For more information on our recommended testing packages, click here. The factors that we can assess include:
Blood Pressure – CVD risk is directly linked to Blood Pressure (BP). Adults aged 40-69 double their risk of CVD if their Systolic BP increases by 20mmHg or their Diastolic BP increases by 10mmHg. It is estimated* that 22% heart attacks in Western Europe are due to a history of high BP.
Total Cholesterol – risk of CVD is directly linked to blood cholesterol levels. Estimates* say that over 45% heart attacks are due to excess blood cholesterol levels in Western Europe. People with high cholesterol are over 3 times more likely to have a heart attack than those with normal levels. For more information on cholesterol, click here.
HDL Cholesterol - not all cholesterol is bad cholesterol so it is important to be aware of the amounts of the different types of cholesterol that you have - especially if your total cholesterol is high. A low level of HDL (good) is one of the key factors in Metabolic Syndrome along with a high visceral fat level, high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar which will increase your risk of CVD.
Triglycerides - BlueSkies can offer triglyceride assessment as part of the Health MOT service. This is an important, often overlooked, parameter when it comes to assessing health risk. At the very least, high triglycerides may indicate that heart health is at risk but they can also reveal a number of other conditions such as cirrhosis of the liver, underactive thyroid gland, diabetes and inflammation of the pancreas.
Metabolic Syndrome - people who have metabolic syndrome are more at risk of heart disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease and type II diabetes. BlueSkies are the only on-site screening provider offering metabolic syndrome assessment.
Diabetes risk – the risk of CVD is significantly increased for people who suffer from diabetes. Men with Type II diabetes have a 2 to 4-fold higher risk of CVD whereas women have a 3 to 5-fold increased risk. Diabetes also magnifies other risk factors such as high cholesterol, high BP and obesity.
Prostate assessment - Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) will be elevated if a man is suffering from malignant conditions such as prostate cancer or benign conditions such as enlargement/inflammation of the prostate. Many studieshave indicated that PSA is the most useful and meaningful tumour marker known for prostate cancer and prostate infection.
Haemoglobin assessment - haemoglobin is responsible for transporting oxygen around the body. If haemoglobin levels are lower than normal, a person may experience shortness of breath, tiredness and faintness amongst other things. Low haemoglobin level is characteristic of anaemia and can be caused by a lack of iron in the diet or blood loss.
Weight & body composition – being overweight or obese increases the risk of CVD and the risk of developing other major risk factors such as high BP, high cholesterol and diabetes. We can assess your current weight as well as your body fat percentage, visceral fat percentage, body water percentage and skeletal muscle mass.
Waist to Hip Ratio – excess weight carried around the abdomen is called 'abdominal obesity' and measuring Waist to Hip Ratio (WHR) assesses this. The risk of CVD increases for people with a high WHR – even in ‘normal’ weight people. It is estimated that 63% of heart attacks in Western Europe are due to abdominal obesity and people with high WHRs are at twice the risk of heart attack than those with a normal WHR.
Body Mass Index – Body Mass Index (BMI) is an assessment of weight in relation to height. As BMI increases above normal, so does risk for CVD.

Why have a BlueSkies Health MOT?
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) was responsible for 39% deaths in the UK in 2002, killing just under 238,000 people. The term CVD includes diseases such as coronary heart disease - heart attacks, strokes, hypertension (high blood pressure), heart failure and rheumatic heart disease.
Of these conditions, coronary heart disease is the biggest killer causing over 117,000 deaths a year in the UK. In fact, approximately one in five deaths in men and one in six deaths in women are attributable to coronary heart disease.
When people think of heart disease, they generally think of heart attacks and they are often assumed to be fatal. However, over 2.5 million people in the UK have been diagnosed with CVD and are having to ‘manage’ their condition through combinations of lifestyle and pharmaceutical interventions.
The good news is that the majority of potential CVD is preventable IF you tackle your risk factors earlier enough. In fact, recent Australian research (2008) has shown that just a 10% decrease in 'bad' cholesterol could save 3,000 lives every year in their country. This goes to show that even small improvements to heart disease risk factors can have a significant impact upon an individual's health outlook.
There is a wide range of risk factors for CVD and BlueSkies Health MOTs screen for many of these. Knowing that you are at risk allows you to change your lifestyle and prevent future cardiovascular complications.
