Preventing holiday-period weight gain?
A recent study has indicated that CLA may be just what you need to prevent holiday weight gain(Watras et al. (2006) Conjugated Linoleic Acid Reduces Body Fat and Prevents Seasonal Weight Gain Amongst Overweight Adults. 2006 Experimental Biology Meeting Abstracts. The FASEB Journal; 20(4): Abstract ID 386.9).
In the study, 40 overweight adults were provided with 3.4g CLA per day or a placebo for 6 months over the holiday season. The subjects were:
- not following any calorie controlled diet
- not taking part in any structured exercise programme
The results showed that the CLA group lost an average of 2.2lb of body fat during the 6 month study period whereas the placebo group actually gained 1.5lb of body fat! These results are pretty amazing considering that the only intervention was the provision of CLA!
Spot-reducing body fat?
This study suggests that CLA may produce region-specific body fat reduction (Gaulier at al. (2006) Conjugated Linoleic Acid Induces Regional-Specific Decreases in Fat Mass in a 6 Months Clinical Trial. 2006 Experimental Biology Meeting Abstracts. The FASEB Journal; 20(4): Abstract ID 138.10).
The subjects were 112 overweight and obese adults and they were provided with 3.4g CLA per day or a placebo for 6 months. Once again, the researchers placed no control on calorie intake or activity level and despite this, positive results were demonstrated.
The CLA group had a 5.6% greater fat loss than the control group, losing an average of 3.3lb of total body weight. Even more fascinating is that:
- women slimmed down their thighs and waist
- men sw a significant decrease in their waist measurement
